How could anyone possibly be against opening the checkbooks to show us the spending? In today’s digital world, it’s very simple to put it online for everyone to see where they are spending our tax dollars. There’s no excuse for not doing this.

Spending transparency Web sites in numerous states and localities have saved millions through more efficient government operations, fewer information requests, more competitive contracting bids and lower risk of fraud...

The only House member in Bannock County to vote in favor of spending transparency was Rep. Ken Andrus. The rest all voted against it. In most places around the country where transparency legislation has been passed it received bi-partisan support. But the Bannock County Democratic Representatives all opposed it. Somebody please inform them that we have a right to know where our tax money is spent!

Taxpayers all over the country are demanding transparency and accountability. School districts, cities, counties and states are responding by posting their spending online. Local citizens have demonstrated that they want to help reduce fraud, waste and abuse, but this isn’t possible with incomplete information.

All taxing districts should become transparent and accountable to the taxpayers. They should each post all of the spending on their Web site so citizens can thoroughly investigate where our money is going and decide what cuts should be made. Fortunately, America is beginning to experience a popular uprising against unaccountable bureaucrats and politicians.

Here is the Column that was submitted weeks ago—before the last District 25 Levy and before the Idaho House vote on state spending transparency—that gives an overview of the spending transparency movement across the country (several newspapers across the state ran it):
